Lee Hanning is in his 19th year at Wofford. He came out of a one-year retirement to rejoin the Terrier staff in 1998 after a previous stint from 1989-96.

Under Hanning’s tutelage, two Wofford punters have signed National Football League contracts. Jimmy Miner inked a deal with the St. Louis Rams in April 2004 after being a four-time All-SoCon selection. Brandon Kale signed with the Carolina Panthers in 2000.

During the 2007 season, Patrick Mugan led the team in scoring with 84 points. The 84 points were the most by a kicker in school history for a single season, while his 57 extra points were also most in a single season. Mugan followed up with 55 extra points during the 2008 season, the second-highest number in school history. His 78 total points on the season are tied for tenth in school history. In 2006, Wofford led the Southern Conference in net punting with a 35.7 average.

Wofford had the SoCon’s best net punting average in 2004 and was again among the national leaders in 2005.  During his tenure with the Terriers, Hanning has coached placekicker Brian Porzio (1991-94) who holds the school record for career kick-scoring points with 219 and Nick Robinson (2003-06), the career leader in PATs.  Hanning has also coached a pair of All-America placekickers in Porzio and Darren Brown (1999-2002).

Hanning previously worked as a scout for Helix High School in San Diego and Santa Ana (Calif.) College. He also performed athletic training duties at Coraopolis (Pa.) High School.

Hanning played halfback at Coraopolis High School in Pittsburgh, where he graduated in 1942. He later attended the University of California at San Diego (1961-66).  As a baseball player, Hanning had a tryout with the Cleveland Indians.
A World War II veteran, Hanning was a member of the 101st Airborne Division. He parachuted onto Utah Beach in Normandy on D-Day and also participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

The 1998 Honorary Letterman by the Wofford College Athletic Hall of Fame, Hanning received a Distinguished Service Award from the Wofford Captain’s Council in 1993. He was also recognized with a 1996 Award of Excellence in Equipment Management from Athletic Management.

Hanning has served as a security attendant for game officials at Carolina Panther home contests while being an equipment assistant during their training camp at Wofford.

Born Lee Hanning on October 26, 1923 in Nemacolin, Pa., he and his late wife, Barbara, were married on May 18, 1977. She passed away in May, 2009. They established the Barbara Jean and Lee Hanning Endowed Scholarship at Wofford, which will support student-athletes on the women’s golf team.
