Wofford vs. Davidson box score
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Davidson Wildcats survived a second-half comeback by Wofford to take a 66-60 win in women’s basketball action Tuesday.
Davidson opened the game with a two-pointer from Alex Thompson, but April Moorhouse responded with a jumper of her own to knot the score at two. The Wildcats scored again and were able to maintain a small lead until the 10:51 mark, when a Kelly Blake jumper gave Wofford its first lead at 13-12.
A Wildcat three-pointer gave Davidson the advantage again, and the Terriers struggled from the field, remaining scoreless for the next three minutes of play and allowing Davidson to extend its lead to eight points with 7:58 remaining.
A made two-pointer from Mahagony Williams cut the lead to six, but after two made free throws from Rachel Brittenham at the 4:47 mark, Wofford allowed Davidson a 12-0 run, leaving the Terriers at a 17-36 disadvantage with 2:18 remaining. The Wildcats extended their lead to 20 points, but the Terriers grabbed the momentum at the end of the first half, scoring five straight points before heading to the break, down 24-39.
Davidson scored a quick two to open the second half and brought its lead to 17 points. A three-point basket from Kelly Dwyer at the 17:23 mark sparked a 10-0 run for the Terriers, cutting the deficit to 7 points with 12:52 remaining in the second half.
The teams traded free throws before Davidson scored again to extend its lead into the double digits at 48-38. Wofford responded with a 12-4 scoring run to cut the Wildcats’ lead to two points with 5:45 remaining, then brought the score within one point less than three minutes later off a pair of made free throws from April Moorhouse.
The comeback was not enough to lift the Terriers over the Wildcats, however, as a Davidson three-pointer gave the team a four-point cushion, and sealed the win with a pair of free throws, leaving the final score at 66-60.
Senior Alex Thompson led the team with 21 points on 8-13 shooting from the field while also pacing the team with four assists. Freshman Sophia Aleksandravicius notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Sophomore April Moorhouse and junior Mahagony Williams each recorded 10 points for the Terriers. Senior Kelly Dwyer led the team with seven rebounds and added seven points, while senior Natalie Gramblin and freshman Domi Gergely each contributed nine points.
With the win, Davidson improves to 11-10 overall and 9-4 in the Southern Conference while Wofford falls to 4-17 on the season and 2-11 in league play. The Terriers will next host Furman on Monday, February 8 in a 6:00 p.m. matchup in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
