SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference Sports Media Association selected its SoCon Football All-Conference Teams and Specialty Awards for the 2011 season. Wofford’s Eric Breitenstein was named the Roy M. “Legs” Offensive Player of the Year.
Earning first team honors from the media were offensive lineman Nate Page, running back Eric Breitenstein, linebacker Alvin Scioneaux, and defensive lineman Alex Goltry. Second team honors went to offensive linemen Jake Miles and Jared Singleton.
Breitenstein, a junior from Valle Cruis, N.C., leads the SoCon and ranks 11th nationally with 122.1 rushing yards per game. He finished the regular season with 1,343 yards and 16 touchdowns. Breitenstein has rushed for at least 100 yards in nine games this year. He averaged 5.5 yards per carry for the Terriers. His 1,343 rushing yards are the third most in a single season at Wofford. Among career leaders, he is second in rushing touchdowns (43), second in career 100 yard games (19), and fourth in career rushing (3,564 yards). He is the first Wofford player to earn Offensive Player of the Year honors from the media.
Page, a senior from Charlotte, North Carolina, is a part of an offensive line which has powered the Terriers’ rushing attack. Wofford leads all of FCS with 356 yards per game on the ground. The Terriers also boast one of the top scoring units in the nation as they average 33.4 points per game, the 23rd best mark in the country.
Scioneaux, a sophomore from Garyville, Louisiana, has started all eleven games at outside linebacker and leads the team in tackles with 78. He is second in the SoCon in sacks with 7.5 and also second in tackles for loss with 16.
Goltry, a senior from Knoxville, Tennessee, has started 35 straight games for the Terriers at defensive end. This season he is second on the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and also second with seven sacks. His seven sacks are ranked third in the SoCon.
Miles, a junior from Charlottesville, Virginia, has started all eleven games at right tackle. Singleton, a sophomore from Lugoff, South Carolina, has started ten of eleven games this season at center. The Wofford offensive line has allowed only seven sacks this season, which is ranked fifth fewest in the nation.
Furman and Georgia Southern placed nine players on the all-conference team, including six first-team selections for both schools. Appalachian State had eight players earn all-conference honors.
Additional honors went to Georgia Southern junior defensive lineman Brent Russell as the Defensive Player of the Year. Chattanooga’s Terrell Robinson earned the Freshman of the Year Award, while GSU’s Jeff Monken was named the Wallace Wade Coach of the Year.
