SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford football team completed spring practice on Wednesday evening with a short scrimmage in Gibbs Stadium. The practice was the last of fifteen sessions allowed by the NCAA.

“Overall it has been a positive and productive spring for our team,” said head coach Mike Ayers. “I think over the spring we have learned that we have the ability to be a big play team. Offensively we grew. Mitch Allen is at a point where he has a lot of confidence and he takes command in the huddle and does a great job. When you look at some of the younger guys, they have come a long ways. We have to get back in the weight room, have everyone get healthy, and then take another shot at it.”

The scrimmage lasted only forty plays and most starters did not participate. Some of the highlights included long receptions by Jeff Ashley, Montae Monroe, Michael Crawford and Thomas Simmons from quarterbacks Chris White and James Lawson. On the ground Lavadrick Farrar and Derek Boyce had big plays, with Boyce carrying the ball for a 25-yard touchdown. Highlights from the defense included a stripped ball by Anthony Carden and a tackle for loss by Jeremy Holt, along with several sacks by the defensive line.

In addition, the team has added one more player to the 2011 signing class, Michael Weimer. A 6-4, 200 pound quarterback from Chapin, South Carolina, Weimer started 20 games at quarterback for Chapin and recorded over 3,000 passing yards with 25 passing touchdowns and eleven rushing touchdowns. He earned All-Region honors twice at quarterback. He also lettered four seasons in basketball and was named All-Region twice as he scored over 800 career points.

When the team returns to campus from spring break, they will continue to work with the strength and conditioning staff four days a week. The team will report for camp in August in preparation for the season opener on September 3 at Presbyterian College.
