SPARTANBURG, S.C. – As the 2011 season rapidly approaches, several Wofford football players have been named to preseason All-America teams. Fullback Eric Breitenstein and defensive end Ameet Pall are both first team All-Americans as released by Phil Steele and the Sports Network.
Breitenstein, a junior from Valle Crucis, North Carolina, was first in the Southern Conference and fourth in the nation in scoring with 22 touchdowns last season. With an average of 126.08 yards per game, he led the SoCon and was fifth in the nation in rushing yards. His 1,639 rushing yards set a new Wofford single season record and he tied a school record with eight 100+ rushing games in 2010. He is a 2011 candidate for the Walter Payton Award.
Pall, a senior from Montreal, Quebec, helped anchor Wofford’s defense which was ranked first in the SoCon and seventh in the nation. He had 12.5 sacks last season, which was the fourth most in school history and was ranked eighth the nation. He also ranked eighth nationally with 1.73 tackles for loss per game and his 22.5 tackles for loss were the third most in a single season at Wofford. Pall earned All-America honors from multiple organizations in 2010 and was the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He is also on the 2011 Buck Buchanan Award Watch List, an award he finished second in the voting for last season.
Phil Steele also released the 2011 preseason All-SoCon team. First team honors went to Breitenstein, Pall, linebacker Mike Niam and offensive lineman Nate Page. Wide receiver Brenton Bersin, defensive lineman Eric Eberhardt, linebacker Mike McCrimon and defensive back Blake Wylie were named to the second team. In Phil Steele’s 2011 FCS Top 40, the Terriers are ranked ninth.
The Southern Conference will announce preseason all-conference honors and the preseason poll on Monday, July 25. Wofford will report to camp on Sunday, August 7, with the first practice scheduled for Monday, August 8.
