SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played Thursday, September 1 and Saturday, September 3. Furman’s Jerodis Williams was named Offensive Player of the Week while Wofford’s Alvin Scioneaux earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Georgia Southern’s Deion Stanley was selected as the Freshman of the Week, and Appalachian State’s Sam Martin was tabbed as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
Scioneaux, a sophomore linebacker from Garyville, Louisiana, recorded a career-high 10 tackles in Wofford’s 35-28 win at Presbyterian. In his first career start, he was credited with three tackles for loss (minus 15 yards), two sacks (minus 13 yards) and two forced fumbles in the contest. The sacks were the first of his career and he now has three career forced fumbles.
It is the first Player of the Week honor for Wofford this season and the first for Scioneaux. He was also named the National Linebacker of the Week and National Defensive Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards.
The Terriers will travel to Clemson to face the Tigers on September 10 at 3:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast by ESPN3.
