Scrimmage Highlights
SPARTANBURG, SC – As part of Fan Fest, the Wofford College football team took part in the second scrimmage of camp on Saturday evening at Gibbs Stadium. The team wore game uniforms, with the offense in white jerseys and the defense in black jerseys. The defense continued to impress, with several interceptions and multiple tackles for loss in the scrimmage.
“I think we are going to have a good defense,” said head coach Mike Ayers. “You get in a situation from an offensive standpoint where it takes only one guy not doing his job. I think there is no doubt that we have some guys that can play. Our linebackers and our three up front guys, we have a good defense. To execute against a good defense you have to do it right and you have to run the play to the right side, you have to understand the checks. We are going to be all right. I think the thing that we saw tonight was that we definitely have to tighten up on some phases. Even with the bad there was some good because it is going to be great teaching film for us.”
In the first series of plays, Stephon Shelton picked off a pass from Brian Kass. The offense responded with first down runs from Will Gay and Eric Breitenstein. In the second series, Jeremy Holt had two tackles for loss, Mike Niam had a pass defense and Mike McCrimon sacked James Lawson. The third series failed to pick up a first down after a sack by Darius Burton. During a punting segment, James Zotto blocked a punt which was returned by Tarek Odom for a touchdown.
In the fourth series of the scrimmage, Wade Francis caught a pass for a first down but the drive ended after two tackles for loss and two sacks. The fifth series did not yield a first down with Evan Jacks behind center. Brian Kass returned for the sixth series of plays, which began as a one-minute hurry-up drill. Travis Thomas had a sack during the series, while Caleb Lucas had a ten-yard first down run.
On the next series, Jonny Marin had a twelve-yard run for a first down before a sack by Qay Bell and Hunter Thurley brought on the field goal unit. Christian Reed and Kasey Redfern were both 2-of-3 on attempts from 42-yards and 47-yards, with both players hitting from 51-yards.
James Lawson, Michael Weimer, and Evan Jacks split the quarterback duties in the final two series. After picking up first downs on runs by Octavius Harden and Caleb Lucas, Weimer found Will Irwin for a 45-yard touchdown reception. Will Irwin added a pair of six-yard receptions in the final series of the night. On a halfback pass, Philemon Persmis deflected the ball and it landed in the hands of Tyler Gleason for the interception. The offense kept things moving in the final plays, which included a 15-yard reception by Thomas Simmons, a 10-yard touchdown catch by Rob Greene, and a 17-yard touchdown catch by Josh Hillard from Evan Jacks.
