Powers was a four-year starter at point guard for the Terriers (1947-51). He was a Team Captain and Most Valuable Player his senior season. He was also a three time All-State selection and a member of three Little Four All-Star teams. In addition to his basketball duties, Powers also played baseball at Wofford and served as the football manager. He later became secretary and treasurer of the Block W Club.

Powers was also the only player in the history of the Southern Textile Tournament to participate in all three classes of the tournament in one year.

An activemember of the community, he served on the Little River Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Little River Medical Center Board of Directors, and the Little River Lions club.

Powers passed away Aug. 7, 1993 in Little River.
