    William W. "Bill" Scheerer arrived at Wofford in 1947 as chairman of the physical education department. Before his retirement in 1977, he served numerous roles, including coaching baseball, golf, basketball, and football. He also was the business manager for the athletic department and ran the intramurals for the college. In addition, he invented a golf handicap system and wrote a book on touch football rules. He retired as a Lt. Commander in the Navy.
