SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford College football team held their second scrimmage of spring practice on Saturday morning at Gibbs Stadium. The scrimmage was approximately 60 plays long and was highlighted by a touchdown run by Nick Crocker and a 50-yard touchdown reception by Rob Greene.
“Overall we saw some good things,” said head coach Mike Ayers. “We saw some young kids do some really good things. I think our older guys understand what they are doing, but when you start moving back in the line-up there are some guys that are still playing with a little bit of fog. The effort and the intensity were really good. We got a lot of stuff in and we worked a lot of things in terms of the kicking game. We have the whole offense in and with this being our twelfth practice it is pretty good to have that much stuff in and execute. A big concern is beating ourselves with the penalties or busted assignments. I was pleased with a lot of the younger guys. I think at halfback we have some guys that are going to be really good. We are going to be really good at fullback as well. When it comes time to play, we will be ready to go and I am looking forward to it.”
On the first drive of the day with Brian Kass at quarterback, Brad Nocek picked up a fourth-and-one. James Zotto came up with an interception for the defense. Nick Crocker then had a first down reception, a conversion of a fourth-and-five, and capped the series with a six-yard touchdown run. Christian Reed, Kasey Redfern, and Paul Inclan then combined to go 11-of-12 on the point after and a 31-yard attempt.
The second and third drives were led by James Lawson at quarterback. Will Irwin had a first down reception, while Cam Flowers had a 15-yard run for a first down. Caleb Lucas had a ten-yard run to pick up a first down and Treyous Jarrells had a seven-yard gain. Tarek Odom and Josh Holt both made stops in the backfield for the defense.
After a punting segment, Michael Weimer took over at quarterback for the final three series. In the first drive, Cody Burris ran for a first down and Jeff Ashley made a first down reception. Zach Muller caught a pass at the ten-yard line, but a pass break-up by Tyrese Little ended the scoring chance. Darius Burton had a sack and a tackle for loss on the series.
The kickers then tried field goal attempts from 24-yards, with Christian Reed and Kasey Redfern making both attempts. The fifth series of the day was dominated by the defense, as Anthony Carden, Phillip LeGrande, and Zach Murray had sacks. In the final series, Rob Greene had two short receptions before Michael Weimer found him deep down the far sideline for a 50-yard touchdown catch.
Approximately twelve players were held out of the scrimmage due to injury, but there were no injuries during the scrimmage.
Wofford has three practices remaining of the fifteen allowed by the NCAA. The Terriers will practice on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week to complete the spring season.
