Wofford College Athletics

Since 1995 the college has allocated a portion of the bequest from the Estate of Mrs. Homozel Mickel Daniel of Greenville SC, to match gifts for endowed scholarships for academics, athletics, and professorships.  The Daniel match rewarded each new $250,000 commitment with a matching $250,000.  Therefore, endowed scholarships of $500,000 have been created as a result of this unique program. To date, 39 endowed athletic scholarships have been established. 

The Daniel-Avant Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, created after the Avant Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, which was started by Mr. H. Daniel Avant ’61 and his family.

The Daniel-Georgia Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund  was established in 2011 by the Atlanta Golf committee to raise scholarship funds in honor of Russell King and Walt Sessoms. As teammates, Russell and Walt were legendary baseball players at Wofford and were intimately engaged in the success and growth of the Wofford college baseball program. The Atlanta Golf committee believes that our annual golf tournament, started in 1995, should honor these two men with all funds raised going to fund baseball scholarships at Wofford. The establishment of the Georgia alumni endowed scholarship will, over time, help us reach our goal of fully funding the baseball program at the NCAA maximum and offering deserving student athletes a chance to play with the very best.

The Daniel-Harley Endowed Scholarship Fund (2), created after the Curtis R. and Cleveland S. Harley Endowed Scholarship Fund, started by Mr. Harley and his wife. The Harleys initiated a second Daniel-Harley match in 2006.

The Daniel-Peterson Endowed Scholarship Fund, created in partnership with the Vera Davis Parsons Memorial Scholarship Fund which was started in 2005 by Ed Wile, a 1973 Wofford graduate, and his wife, Vickey Wile, of Atlanta, Ga., to honor Coach Jack Peterson.
