GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford College men's soccer team was bested, 2-1, by the University of North Carolina – Greensboro with eight minutes left to play in double overtime, on Saturday evening at UNCG Soccer Complex.
The Terriers (5-4-0, 1-1-0) trailed in the game for 20 minutes, 1-0, until Matthew Aurednik struck his eighth goal of the season in the 75th minute. Junior midfielder Will Puckett booted a through pass into Aurednik in the box, allowing the sophomore forward to beat the keeper for the equalizer. The score was not settled in regulation, advancing the teams to the overtime, golden goal scenario.
The two sides battled through one overtime period with nothing to separate them. Two minutes into the second period, Christopher Reingen struck home his first goal of the season to win the game for UNCG (1-7-2, 1-0-1). The ball was played into Reingen on a free kick, setting up the shot, blasted into the back of the net from 20 yards out.
Despite the scoreboard, the Terriers were dominant on offense. Wofford outshot UNCG 23-12, and won the corner battle 8-5. Will Puckett and Forrest Lasso earned yellow cards in the contest.
UNCG's William Pyle earned 10 saves and his first win in the match, while Wofford's Garrett Closs drops to a record of 4-4-0.
The Terriers continue their road stand, playing at Furman on Tuesday. The match is slated from a 7 p.m. start.
