Football Wins 31-7 At Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – On Saturday night, the Wofford College football team used big plays to come away with a 31-7 win over Presbyterian College at Bailey Memorial Stadium. The Terriers had four plays of over 50 yards and scored the final 17 points of the game to secure the victory.
 
Wofford opens the season 4-0 overall, while the Blue Hose are 2-3 on the season. The Terriers were led by Blake Morgan with 120 rushing yards and two touchdowns, along with 72 receiving yards. Lennox McAfee added 60 rushing yards and a 75-yard touchdown pass to Jason Hill. The Blue Hose were led by quarterback Ben Cheek, who was 19-of-30 passing for 130 yards and he rushed for 44 yards.
 
"We played better in the second half from an offensive standpoint," said head coach Mike Ayers. "We had some big plays and anytime you have explosive plays that helps. I thought defensively we stepped up in the second half and got off the field. They are a good offense and have some good pieces. We were fortunate to come out of here with a win and we are 4-0. The conference starts again after this and it is nothing but tough. We play a week from today again Western Carolina and they are the real deal."
 
The Blue Hose had the ball first and gained one first down before punting. With the ball at the six-yard line, Blake Morgan went 94 yards down the near sideline for a touchdown on the first play of the game for the Terriers. Wofford had a 7-0 lead at 12:08 in the first quarter. Presbyterian had one first down on their next possession before punting and then Wofford went three-and-out and punted. The Blue Hose failed to pick up a first down and punted back to the Terriers.
 
With the ball back, Wofford took eleven plays to cover 80 yards as the drive was capped by a 15-yard run by Andre Stoddard. The Terriers led 14-0 with 22 seconds left in the first quarter. The Blue Hose went three-and-out and punted, while Wofford gained one first down before punting. Presbyterian then picked up three first downs to move inside the ten-yard line. A seven-yard touchdown run by Torrance Marable cut the lead to 14-7 with 6:25 left in the second quarter. Wofford then gained one first down before punting back to the Blue Hose with three minutes left in the first half. After a three-and-out, the Terriers took over with 53 seconds remaining at the 36-yard line but time ran out on the half.
 
To open the second half, Wofford went three-and-out and punted. The Blue Hose had a first down and converted a fourth-and-one, but the play was called back by penalty and Presbyterian punted. Wofford took over at the one yard line and gained a first down. Wofford fumbled, but the ball was recovered by the Terriers for a first down. Brandon Goodson then completed a 72-yard pass to Blake Morgan on third down to give Wofford first-and-goal at the two. The Terriers couldn't get the ball in the end zone and settled for a 19-yard field goal by Luke Carter for a 17-7 lead with 1:54 left in the third quarter.
 
On the next drive by the Blue Hose, they went three-and-out and punted. On the first play after the punt, Lennox McAfee ran 52 yards for a first down. Brandon Goodson picked up a first down on a run to the nine-yard line. Blake Morgan capped the drive with a five-yard touchdown run to give Wofford a 24-7 lead with 12:37 left in the fourth quarter. After a 41-yard kickoff return, the Blue Hose gained four first downs to move inside the 10. The Blue Hose fumbled at the goal line and it went out of bounds just inside the pylon, resulting in a touchback for the Terriers.
 
The Terriers then completed a 75-yard touchdown pass from Lennox McAfee to Jason Hill for a 31-7 lead with 7:34 remaining in the game. Presbyterian was able to pick up two first downs and then converted a fourth-and-three. A throw to the end zone was intercepted by Graham Massey and Wofford ran one play to end the game.
 
Wofford had 478 total yards, with 311 rushing. Presbyterian had 252 total yards, 130 of which were passing. Wofford and Presbyterian each had 14 first downs. Wofford was 7-of-13 on third downs. Presbyterian was 9-of-18 on third down and 1-of-2 on fourth down. Wofford was called for two penalties, while Presbyterian had four penalties. Presbyterian had a 33:44 to 26:16 time of possession advantage.

With the win, Wofford takes a 41-40-3 in the series that began in 1914. The Terriers have won six straight games over Presbyterian.
 
Wofford has won four straight to open a season for the first time since 2012 (five straight).
 
The 94-yard touchdown run by Blake Morgan in the first quarter was the longest of his career and the fourth-longest run in school history. The 72-yard reception by Morgan in the third quarter was the 12th longest catch in school history.
 
Blake Morgan's 120 rushing yards marked his first career 100+ rushing game and was the first 100+ rushing game of the season for a Terrier.
 
The 75-yard touchdown pass from Lennox McAfee to Jason Hill in the fourth quarter was the sixth longest pass play in school history. It was the first touchdown pass by McAfee and the first career touchdown reception by Hill.
 
Graham Massey's interception in the fourth quarter was his first of the season and first in his career.
 
Daryl Vining led the team with nine tackles, while Terrance Morris had 1.5 tackles for loss.
 
Game captains were Chandler Gouger, Jason Hill, Devin Watson and Datavious Wilson.
 
Attendance was 2,862 at Bailey Memorial Stadium.
 
The Terriers will return to Southern Conference play next weekend when Western Carolina visits Gibbs Stadium. The Catamounts defeated Chattanooga 45-7 on Saturday night and are 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the league.
