Wofford Football Downs VMI 59-14

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team scored the first five touchdowns of the game on the way to a 59-14 win over VMI on Saturday night at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers had eight different players score touchdowns and set a school record with 671 yards of total offense.
 
Wofford opens the season 2-0 overall and in the Southern Conference. The Keydets are 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in the league. The Terriers were led by Nathan Walker with nine carries for 92 yards and a touchdown, while Jimmy Weirick, Andre Stoddard and Ryan Lovelace each had over 50 rushing yards and a touchdown. Joe Newman was 8-of-9 passing for 129 yards and two touchdowns. The Keydets were led by Reece Udinski with 21-of-35 passing for 162 yards and a touchdown.
 
The Keydets had the ball to open the game and had three first downs, but the drive ended with a 43-yard field goal that was missed. Wofford took over and had three first downs and then capped the drive with a25-yard touchdown pass from Joe Newman to Jason Hill for a 7-0 lead at the 7:20 mark of the first quarter. VMI then went three-and-out and punted back to the Terriers. After a first down by Blake Morgan, Ryan Lovelace went 42-yards for a touchdown. Wofford had a 14-0 lead with 5:01 remaining in the first half. The Keydets went three-and-out and punted, with the Terriers taking over at the eight-yard line. Following three first downs, Andre Stoddard ran 32-yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead with a minute remaining in the first quarter.
 
After the Keydets went three-and-out on their next drive, Wofford took over again at the eight-yard line. A 63-yard run by Nathan Walker led to a 21-yard touchdown pass from Joe Newman to Landon Parker. It was his first career touchdown reception and Wofford had a 28-0 lead with 13:45 on the clock in the second quarter. VMI converted a fourth down play with a fake punt but had to punt after a sack. Wofford had three first downs before Miller Mosley ran the ball in from the 10-yard line for a 35-0 lead at the 6:42 mark in the second quarter. VMI responded with a drive that included four first downs and was capped by a 4-yard pass reception by Jakob Herres for a 35-7 score with 4:09 remaining in the first half. The Terriers had two first downs and then Nick Karas caught a 45-yard pass to put the ball at the one-yard line. Nathan Walker ran it in to end the drive for a 42-7 lead. The Keydets went three-and-out and then Wofford took a knee to send the game to halftime.
 
The Terriers opened the second half with Jimmy Weirick at quarterback. After four first downs, Luke Carter hit a 38-yard field goal to make it a 45-7 game at 8:03 in the third quarter. The Keydets punted after gaining one first down. After a first down by penalty, Jimmy Weircik ran 63 yards for a touchdown as the Terriers pushed the lead to 52-7 with 5:09 on the clock in the third quarter. VMI and Wofford then trade three-and-outs. With the ball back, VMI faced a fourth-and-two and the pass on the play was intercepted by Dimitri Redwood and returned 40-yards for a touchdown. The Wofford lead was 59-7 with 1:27 left in the third quarter.
 
The teams traded punts on the next two drives. The Keydets took over at the 20-yard line with 10:32 remaining in the game and had one first down. The punt was blocked by T.J. Luther and Wofford recovered at the 10-yard line. A 27-yard field goal by Luke Carter was wide left and the Keydets took over. On the ensuing drive, VMI scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass to make it a 59-14 game. Wofford got the ball back with 3:52 left in the game and gained a pair of first downs to run out the clock.
 
Wofford had 671 total yards, with 450 rushing yards. VMI had 314 total yards, 250 of which were passing. Wofford had a 34 to 21 advantage in first downs. Wofford was 5-of-9 on third downs. VMI was 4-of-18 on third down, but 3-of-4 on fourth down. Both teams were called for six penalties. Wofford had a 36:33 to 23:27 time of possession advantage.
 
Wofford vs. VMI Post-Game Notes
The 671 yards of total offense were the most in school history. The previous record was 647 yards in 1925 against Piedmont. It was only the seventh game in school history with over 600 yards of total offense. The last time Wofford had over 600 yards of total offense was in 2012 against Lincoln (602).
 
Nathan Walker, Jimmy Weirick and Landon Parker scored their first career touchdowns on offense, while Dimitri Redwood scored on his first career interception. It was the first interception returned for a touchdown by the Terriers since Sept. 17, 2016 by Mason Alstatt against Johnson C. Smith.
 
The Terriers are 2-0 in league play for the second straight season.
 
There were no significant injuries in the contest for the Terriers.
 
Billy Hinton led the team with five tackles, while T.J. Neal recorded the first two sacks of his career.
 
Game captains were Justus Basinger, Mikel Horton, Lennox McAfee and Brandon Zamary.
 
Attendance was 4,957 at Gibbs Stadium.
 
Wofford inducted the newest members of the Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday. A ceremony was held pregame in Richardson Indoor Stadium, with the inductees also honored at halftime.  Michael Gilmartin '18, Alvin Scioneaux '13, Jared Singleton '13 and Howard Wilkerson '06 were selected by the Hall of Fame Committee of the Wofford College Terrier Club Board of Directors as the 2018 inductees. In addition, the Hall of Fame honored the late Rev. Talmage Skinner '56 as the Distinguished Service Award recipient and Charlie Jones '73 as an Honorary Letterman.
 
Wofford will travel to Wyoming next Saturday for the first ever meeting between the two teams. The Terriers will not return home until Saturday, October 20 against ETSU as part of Homecoming weekend.
