Men's Tennis Falls Short at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – With the match knotted at 3-3, the Chattanooga Mocs would manage to come out on top in a match-deciding three-set tiebreaker to take a 4-3 victory over the Terriers at the UTC Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. Wofford doubles tandems of Lucas Cerbelli/Diego Losada and Javi Casasolas/Bryce Keim picked up doubles wins, while Omar Williams and Lucas Cerbelli rang in the singles wins for the Terriers on the day. The loss drops Wofford to 6-11 overall and 3-3 in the SoCon, while Chattanooga moves to 11-9 and 2-2.

Lucas Cerbelli and Diego Losada got things rolling to start in doubles play, making quick work of Pablo Llebeili and Jacob Marshall on the No. 3 court, 6-1, for their fourth win together as a pair.

Javi Casasolas and Bryce Keim then sealed the deal in No. 2 doubles, dropping Niklas Gerdes and Tomas Rodriguez, 6-2, for their second win of the season and the doubles point for Wofford.

The competitive nature in both teams came out in singles play, as three of the six matches on the day went into three sets.

Sophomore Omar Williams brought in the first singles win of the day on the No. 2 court, downing Tomas Rodriguez in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, for his sixth singles win of the year.

The Mocs then answered in No. 5 singles, as Javi Casasolas fell in three sets to Pablo Llebeili. After dropping the first set, Casasolas responded with a 6-3 finish in the second to push the tiebreaker set. Trading blows, Llebeili would eventually hold on, 6-4, in the third to put Chattanooga on the board, 2-1.

Chattanooga would take the next two singles matches to take a 3-2 lead, as Losada fell in straight sets to Jacob Marshall on the No. 6 court, while Julian Chousa dropped a highly competitive matchup with Niklas Gerdes on the No. 1 court, 7-6, 7-5.

Junior Lucas Cerbelli took the first set of his match in tiebreak against Simon Bustamante in No. 4 singles, though, Bustamante would answer in the second set in tiebreak fashion as well. Cerbelli went on to find his groove in the third set, finishing Bustamante off, 6-2, for his fifth win in the No. 4 slot to tie the match up at 3-3.

With the match on the line, after dropping the first set 6-3, Edu Villar had gutted out a comeback with a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreak in the second set against Chattanooga's Kerim Hyatt on the No. 3 court. Both players refused to go down easily as the third set would end in another tiebreak, with Hyatt unfortunately coming out on top, 7-6 (7-5), to hand Wofford their third SoCon loss of the season by the end of the match.

Next, the Terriers will travel to face crosstown rival USC Upstate on Friday, April 5. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
