SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team lost to the Mercer Bears at Snyder Field on Saturday night, falling 3-1. Though Mercer struck first with a goal in the 17
th minute,
Brandon Oddy netted the equalizer to open the second half in the 57
th minute. The Bears pulled ahead, however, in the 61
st minute and didn't look back. An insurance goal was scored a minute later to seal a 3-1 victory for the Bears.
Magnus Kjoller fired the match's first shot quickly, missing in the 3
rd minute. Mercer put on their first shot in the 4
th minute, but
Joshua Old made the save. Kjoller was booked for a yellow card in the 7
th minute, but this did not slow down the Terriers.
Hugo Molding missed high in the 9
th minute, and
Brandon Oddy hit the post in the 12
th minute. Mercer responded with a goal in the 17
th minute, striking first thanks to Kadeem Agard. Wofford received another booking in the 27
th minute, but the Terriers remained on the offensive.
Thaddeus Dennis missed high in the 29
th minute before
Mitchell Myers had a couple of looks, but neither connected. The Bears gave one final go in the 43
rd minute, but
Joshua Old made the save to keep it a one-goal game at the break.
Though Mercer opened the second half with a shot in the 48
th minute, Wofford quickly took control. The Bears received their first yellow card in the 52
nd minute, and then with 54:48 on the clock, the Terriers pulled level. In a scramble for the ball in front of the net,
Mitchell Myers was able to connect a pass to
Brandon Oddy, who slotted the equalizer home. The game was not tied long, as Mercer bounced back with a goal in the 61
st minute.
Brandon Oddy was called for a foul, which set up the Bears with an attack that ended in Liam Coxhead finding the back of the net. With the momentum firmly in their favor, the Bears struck again in the 62
nd minute off the foot of Michael Ille. Dyland Gaither contributed the assist. The Terriers began pushing for a comeback.
Christoffer Saietz had a shot saved in the 72
nd minute. The Bears fired a couple of shots of their own before
Mitchell Myers tried to slot one home that was again saved.
Judd Wagner received a yellow card in the 81
st minute, but
Mitchell Myers kept their Terriers pressing with a shot in the 82
nd minute, but it could not connect.
Kameron Gorst shot in the 84
th minute, and
Mitchell Myers gave one more go in the 85
th minute, but the Bears defense held firm to preserve the 3-1 victory.
Wofford (4-10-1, 1-4-1) totaled 12 shots in the match while Mercer (8-7-1, 4-1-1) was just behind with 11. The Bears held the corner kick advantage, however, 6-4.
Joshua Old (4-9-1) tallied two saves in goal for the Terriers. His counterpart, Trevor McMullin (6-4-1), picked up three saves for the Bears.
Wofford will be back in action on Monday, Nov. 1 for the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament. The Terriers will host the VMI Keydets at Snyder Field with kickoff set for 7:00 pm.
