Men’s Soccer Falls in SoCon Quarterfinals

MACON, Ga. – The Wofford men's soccer team was eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament after losing 3-1 to the Furman Paladins. Wofford conceded early when Furman struck in the 10th minute. An early red card shorthanded the Terriers in the 17th minute, and though they held firm in the first half, the Paladins opened the second half with a goal in the 48th minute. A third put the game out of reach in the 56th minute. Wofford would get on the board thanks to a Nic Parker score in the 80th minute, but it was too little, too late for the Terriers to come back, dropping the match 3-1.

Furman appeared to strike first early in the match when the ball reached the back of the net in the 3rd minute, but the flag went up to signal offside, nullifying the goal. Nic Parker responded in the 7th minute by trying to slot the ball to the bottom left of the goal, but it was saved. A minute later, Furman tried to go bottom right, but it was saved as well. In the 10th minute, however, the Paladins broke through. Joshua Old came out to break up a cross, and the ball spilled away from him straight to Alfredo Diaz-Santillan. He quickly found Miles Fenton, who chipped the ball over and into the open net for the match's first score. The Terriers tried to pull level with two shots that both missed right, but then the momentum shifted right back to the Paladins with a critical booking. After a tackle in the 17th minute, Christoffer Saietz was sent off with a straight red card, forcing the Terriers down a man. The Paladins took advantage, coming within inches of adding a second goal in the 20th minute, but the ball banged off the left post. The referee went to his book again in the 29th and 36th minutes to show yellow cards to two more Terriers, providing the Paladins more opportunities to strike. Furman would respond with four more shots, but they were unable to connect on any of them, keeping it a one goal game at the break.

Furman came out of halftime on the attack, quickly earning a corner kick that led to a shot in the 47th minute, but it sailed over the net. A minute later, the Paladins found the net to extend their lead. The ball was passed across the box to Alfredo Diaz-Santillan striking forward as he one-timed it into the net to give Furman a 2-0 lead. The Terriers did not show any quit, however, as Daan Snellink responded with a long shot in the 52nd minute that looked like it might pull Wofford within one, but the Furman keeper made a diving save. With the momentum firmly in their favor, the Paladins extended their lead in the 56th minute off a corner kick. An attempted header turned into an assist for Diaz-Santillan when Jake Raine dove forward in the box to head the ball home himself, putting Furman ahead by three. With Furman firmly in control, Wofford attempted a few shots with no luck until finally breaking through in the 80th minute. Nic Parker raced down the field, carving through the Paladin defense before firing the ball into the net to put Wofford on the board. The Terriers had another chance to pull closer in the 87th minute when Amin Mohammedi fired a long shot that was saved, and Kameron Gorst had a great look on the rebound, but the Paladin defense held firm to keep the ball out of the net, securing the 3-1 result.

Wofford (5-11-1, 1-4-1) tallied 11 shots despite being a man down, keeping pace with the 14 shots of Furman (7-8-1, 4-2-0). The Paladins led in corners as well, 6-2. Joshua Old (5-10-1) secured five saves on the night for the Terriers. Ben Roberts (6-8-1) tallied four saves in net for the Paladins.
