Men's Soccer Drops Home Opener Versus Georgia Southern

Late Eagles goal in the 80th minute sealed the victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision against Georgia Southern (2-3) in its home opener on Sunday night, as the Eagles managed to capitalize in position on a pair of put-back goals inside the box, including a late clincher in the 80th minute, to come away with the victory at Snyder Field. The loss drops Wofford to 0-2 on the season.

The Terriers held plenty of scoring opportunities throughout the match, seeing shots on goal from Mitchell Myers, Brandon Oddy, Jackson Wrobel and Magnus Kjoller, though, Georgia Southern keeper Jose Eduardo Bomfim managed to keep a clean sheet for the Eagles with four saves on the night.

Myers and Oddy led the Terriers with two shots each, while Wrobel, Kjoller, Thaddeus Dennis and Will Pucek all logged shots on the night.

Despite the loss, junior goalkeeper Joshua Old logged a career-best six saves over the match's duration.

The Eagles finished with an 11-8 shot advantage over the Terriers, as the match featured intense physicality on both sides with five yellow cards handed throughout the match.

Georgia Southern would be the first to kick things off in the 10th minute, as Joshua Old picked up his first save of the night on a shot from just outside the top of the box. Shortly after, the Terriers managed to make some movement up field, as junior Brandon Oddy found himself a glimpse of space for a shot from the left side of the box in the 17th minute that unfortunately skimmed the left side of the post into the net for a Georgia Southern goal kick.

Old would deny another Georgia Southern shot in the 29th minute, as both teams struggled to find solid opportunities over the remainder of the first half. Old went on to nab another save on a long-distance shot from the Eagles' Luca Ziegler in the 42nd, as the Terriers held the possession advantage for most of the opening frame, though, weren't able to capitalize on positioning to find quality looks.

Wofford opened the second half with a look from Mitchell Myers, as Myers would find space on a nifty move by a Georgia Southern defender around the far right wing to launch a look from the top of the 18, though, Eduardo Bonfim was in position for the save in the 50th minute. The Eagles then found some rhythm and openings in the Wofford defense, as Old would make a diving save on a shot in the 53rd minute, in which Georgia Southern's Mauro Gutierrez-Solis was able to immediately corral and laser in the put-back inside the box to break the silence with a 1-0 advantage.

Myers found another opportunity roughly three minutes later that would sail wide right, as Jackson Wrobel went on to find some separation in the 63rd to rifle a shot from the left side of the 18 that would ultimately be saved. Minutes later, Will Pucek looked to thread the needle on a shot in the 66th that would unfortunately nick an Eagles foot to put the ball back into play. A period of back-and-forth play then ensued up until the Eagles managed to keep the possession in Wofford's half, as Gutierrez-Solis would find space for another shot just inside the 18 that Joshua Old met for his fifth save in the 74th minute.

Magnus Kjoller got involved after connecting on a header off a cross from the far left wing (81st), however, Wofford still remained scoreless through seven shots. Old then made another critical save on a Jona Kafka shot from just 12-yards out inside the box, though, the Terriers fell victim to another unlucky follow-up by GSU's Hendrik Strobl in the 81st minute that gave the Eagles a two-score advantage with under 10 minutes to play.

The Terriers scrambled to keep possession and position themselves for late scoring opportunities, as Oddy would get a final look for Wofford with a shot from inside the 18 in the 87th minute that Eduardo Bomfim managed to corral. The Terriers competed to the end in not allowing any more Georgia Southern opportunities, though, Bomfim's final save would ultimately allow the Eagles to hold on for the victory at the end of regulation.

Wofford (0-2) returns to the pitch on Tuesday, September 7, when the Terriers travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., for a 7 p.m. matchup at Gardner-Webb.
