CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – In the opening round of the 2022 Southern Conference Tournament, the Wofford College women's tennis team was defeated 4-2 by Chattanooga at The Champions Club. The Mocs, seeded #4, won the doubles point and added three singles victories to advance over the #5 seeded Terriers.
After a delay of three hours due to rain, the doubles point got underway. The Mocs won at the #2 position, but the Terrier All-SoCon duo of
Liz Massie and
Lilie Steryous earned a win at the #1 position by a 6-4 score to tie the point. At #3 doubles,
Emma Sorensen and
Brianna Wilbur were tied at 6-6 but the Mocs won the tiebreaker by a 7-5 margin to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, the six matches were tied at three each after the first set.
Lilie Steryous was the first to finish as she had a 6-4, 6-3 win at the #2 position. The Mocs earned wins at the #6 and the #3 positions to take a 3-1 lead in the match.
Lily Woods was down early but battled back for a 6-4, 7-5 win at the #1 position. At #5 singles, the Mocs had a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win to clinch the match. The #4 singles match was unfinished with
Georgia Fischer winning the first set 7-6 and the second set was tied at 5-5.
"This was not the result we wanted today, but I am so proud of the fight of this team," said head coach
Krissy Hall. "They have battled all season long and we left it all out on the court today. I want to give Chattanooga credit has they played extremely well today!"
Wofford ends the season at 9-10 and 3-4 in the Southern Conference, while Chattanooga is 14-8 overall and advance to the semifinals to face #1 seed Furman.
