Spartanburg, S.C.- Wofford men's soccer guaranteed the team will have a shot at the Southern Conference regular season title after defeating VMI 1-0 on Saturday, October 21.
Sophomore forward
Nikolai Rojel, the leading goal scorer in the Southern Conference, padded his lead in the 55th minute off a Wofford corner swung in by sophomore
Jakob Andersson. Rojel flicked the pass off his head straight into the net for the match's deciding strike.
With his goal, the sophomore becomes the first Terrier to net ten goals in a season since Matthew Aurednik in 2014 and tied Wilson Hood and Connor Davis for the fourth most career goals in Wofford's D-I era (1995-present).
On the opposite side of the field, senior goalkeeper
Cameron Victor anchored a defense that became the sixth Wofford defense to keep six clean sheets in a single season- last done in 2014. Wofford's defense held the Keydets to just two shots on the afternoon, only one of those on target, and neither shot coming in the first half. For his part in the shutout Victor tied Mark Buskirk, Joey Taylor and Thomas Hunter for the most in a single season in program history and moved into a tie with Garrett Closs and Andrew Drennan for the second most career shutouts in team history.
As a team, today's result gives Wofford the most points under Head Coach
Joel Tyson and firmly in a position to bring the conference regular season title back to Spartanburg, South Carolina. A win tonight by UNCG over Mercer would ensure the Terriers can finish no lower than third- which would be the best finish since Wofford earned the number three seed in 2016.
Wofford will finish their Southern Conference slate on Saturday, October 28, when they host the Furman Paladins. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 7:00 PM on ESPN+.
