SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It took two days, but the Wofford College women's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday and Thursday at the Webb Tennis Complex. The Terriers won the doubles point before play was suspended due to rain on Wednesday. Singles matches resumed on Thursday, with each team winning three matches.
In doubles play,
Lily Woods and
Georgia Fischer picked up a 6-2 win at the #1 position. The Runnin' Bulldogs took the #2 doubles spot. At #3 doubles,
Catherine Blouin and
Brianna Wilbur claimed a 7-5 win which clinched the doubles point for the Terriers.
On Thursday, singles play began with
Catherine Blouin picking up a 6-2, 6-0 win to start things off for the Terriers at the #6 position. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with a win at #2 singles before
Emely Kahrs added a 7-5, 6-4 win at the #5 position.
Brianna Wilbur lost the first set 4-6 at #3 singles, but rallied to take the second set 6-6 and the third set 6-0 to clinch the match for Wofford. Gardner-Webb was able to win at #4 singles and #1 singles in closely played matches that went three sets each.
"I am so proud of how well we competed as a team," said head coach
Krissy Hall. "We showed great determination and grit in this match. It was a total team effort and I am so proud of the entire team."
The Terriers (3-4) will be back in action on Saturday, February 18, against Mars Hill in a doubleheader with the men's team that will begin at 11:00 a.m.
