Women’s Tennis Splits Sunday Doubleheader

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Sunday, the Wofford College women's tennis team split a doubleheader at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers lost the first match 7-0 to Georgia Southern and rebounded with a 7-0 win in the second match against Converse.  
 
In the first match against Georgia Southern, the Eagles won at #1 doubles 6-2. The Wofford team of Emma Sorensen and Breda Brennan took the #2 doubles position at 6-2, but the Eagles were able to win the point with a 6-3 win at the #3 position.
 
To open singles play, the Eagles won in straight sets at the #4 and #1 positions. At #6 singles, the Eagles won the first set but Catherine Blouin second set 6-4 before a 6-0 third set won the match and clinched the overall match as well. After Georgia Southern won at #2 singles in straight sets, both the #3 singles and #5 singles were decided by a third set tiebreaker. Georgia Fisher at the #5 position won the first set, lost the second set and the third set was won 10-7 by Georgia Southern. The #3 singles match with Brianna Wilbur saw her drop the first set and then rally from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to tie it at 5-5 and win the next two games for a 7-5 win. In the third set tiebreaker, it was tied at 7-7 when Georgia Southern scored the final three points for the 10-7 win.
 
In the second match of the day against Converse, the Terriers came away with all three doubles matches to earn a point.
 
During singles play, Wofford swept all six matches against the Valkyries. Brianna Wilbur opened things with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the #3 position and Emely Kahrs added a 6-1, 66-1 win at the #5 position. At #1 singles, Lily Woods came away with a 6-2, 6-3 win to clinch the match for the Terriers. Breda Brennan then claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win at the #2 position and at #6 singles Catherine Blouin won 6-0, 6-4. At #4 singles, Georgia Fischer won the first set 6-1, but had to battle in the second set for a 7-5 win to end the match.
 
Wofford (1-4) will have two matches on Saturday, February 11, as they host Emmanuel (11:00 a.m.) and Mars Hill (3:00 p.m.).
