BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford women's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Samford at the Samford Tennis Center. The Bulldogs won the doubles point and then the two teams split the six singles matches, four of which went to three sets.
In the doubles matches, the Bulldogs swept all three matches.
Wofford started singles play with
Emely Kahrs earning a 7-5, 6-1 win at the #5 position. Samford then picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win at the #1 singles position. The other four matches went to three sets each. At the #4 position,
Georgia Fischer won the first set 6-2, lost the second 3-6, but rallied for a 6-3 win in the third set. The Terriers gained a 3-2 lead in the match when
Brianna Wilbur had a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at the #3 singles position.
At the #2 singles position,
Breda Brennan won the first set 6-4 before the Bulldogs won the next two sets to tie the match at 3-3. In the deciding singles match at the #6 position, Wofford's
Catherine Blouin had a 7-5 win in the first set. The Bulldogs however won the next two sets by a 6-4, 6-0 score to take the match by the 4-3 final score.
The Terriers (10-9, 1-4) will be at Mercer on Tuesday afternoon before returning home for the final regular season match on Friday, April 7, at 1:00 p.m. against Western Carolina. Samford is now 11-5 overall and 3-1 in league play.
