CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford women's tennis team had their season come to an end on Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Championship. East Tennessee State, who was the #2 seed, won the doubles point and then clinched the match with three singles wins for a 4-0 final score as the remaining three singles matches were unfinished.
Wofford entered the SoCon Tournament at the Champions Club in Chattanooga as the #6 seed and reached the semifinals for the third time in the last four seasons.
In doubles, the Buccaneers won at the #2 position 6-4. Wofford's pair of
Emely Kahrs and
Brianna Wilbur had a 3-2 lead at the #3 position, but were defeated 6-4 as ETSU was able to clinch the doubles point. ETSU also held a lead in the #1 doubles match that was unfinished.
After the first set of singles, ETSU had a lead in four of the six matches as Wofford's
Catherine Blouin (6-3) and
Lily Woods (7-5) won their opening sets. The Buccaneers took a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #5 singles. They closed out the match with straight-set wins at the #3 and #2 positions. The matches at the #1, #4 and #6 positions were unfinished.
The Terriers close the season with a 12-11 record, the fourth time in the last five seasons in which they have finished with a winning record. The #2 seed, East Tennessee State, improves to 18-7 overall and advance to the finals for the eighth straight season.
