Football Drops Home Opener To Presbyterian

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With 28 seconds left and facing fourth down, the Presbyterian College football team scored an 18-yard touchdown to earn a 23-20 win over Wofford College on Saturday evening at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers had taken the lead in the third quarter, but the Blue Hose scored the final ten points in the game.

Wofford opens the season at 0-3, while Presbyterian is 2-1 overall. The Terriers were led by Bryce Corriston who ran four times for 78 yards and a touchdown, while completing 6-of-13 passes. Ryan Ingram added 12 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown. The Blue Hose were led by Wesley Tyler with 16-of-41 passing for 281 yards and two touchdowns.

"I think the first thing you have to do is give credit to PC and the game that they played," said head coach Shawn Watson. "We did not make tackles at times and we gave up big plays on defense. Offensively we did not deliver big plays in the passing game. We had some protection issues we need to fix, which is on us as coaches. On offense we have to take advantage of the nice plays that special teams had tonight. We just have to keep working and the grind will get us there."

The Terriers had the ball first and had three first downs. After a holding penalty, a 51-yard field goal try was short. On the first play from scrimmage by the Blue Hose, they scored a touchdown on a flea flicker for a 66-yard reception to take a 7-0 lead with 10:29 on the clock. On the next drive by Wofford, they went three-and-out and punted. Presbyterian had two first downs before having to punt and then the Terriers went three-and-out again. With the ball back, the Blue Hose had a 30-yard reception to move to the 25-yard line when the first quarter ended. They added to the lead with a 41-yard field goal at the 14:06 mark of the second quarter.

On the ensuing series, Wofford was faced with third-and-long but Bryce Corriston broke free and went 70-yards for the touchdown. The score was 10-7 in favor of the Blue Hose with 12:40 left in the second quarter. Presbyterian then had three passing first downs to move to the red zone. On a 35-yard field goal attempt, Isaiah Wadsworth came from the edge and blocked the kick to give the ball back to the Terriers. Wofford went three-and-out and punted. The Blue Hose then went three-and-out and lined up to punt. The snap was over the head of the punter, Ezra King, who then threw a pass that was intercepted by Kyle Watkins. The Terriers then had two first downs before tying the game with a 36-yard field goal by Bridger Jones with 1:56 left in the first half.
