Clemson, S.C.- The Wofford men's soccer team (6-6-2, 2-2-0) fought hard but eventually fell 2-1 to the No.2 Clemson Tigers (11-2-2, 5-2-0) on Tuesday night at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, South Carolina.
The Tigers got out of the gates fast in the first half, testing freshman goalkeeper Leo Ledin and the Wofford defense often. Clemson took ten shots in the first half while also having 53 percent of the possession. Out of those 10 shots taken, Leo Ledin made four saves, holding the top scoring offense in the nation in check. In the 42nd minute a penalty was issued to Wofford, which gave Clemson a penalty kick. Clemson would capitalize on the opportunity to make the score 1-0 heading into the second half.
The Terriers settled into the game in the second half, dominating possession and building steadily in the offensive zone. By the end of the game, Wofford would hold the 51-49 possession advantage over No. 2 Clemson. Wofford would take three shots in the second half but could not test the keeper. Clemson found a breakaway opportunity on a blocked shot and before the Wofford defense got set, and the Tigers would extend their lead to 2-0 in the 83rd minute.
The final ten minutes proved to be the most exciting, as a long ball into the box found a Terrier who was quickly fouled deep inside the box. The newly subbed in Stewart Patnaud would be tapped with penalty-taking duties, tepping up the spot, pausing for a second to throw off the keeper's timing, then delivering a shot to the bottom left post for the goal. Cutting the score to 2-1, the Wofford offense sparked into life and desperately tried to find an equalizer. However, as the ball entered the top of the box Wofford's last effort was deterred, icing the game for the Clemson Tigers.
The Terriers were outshot in the match four to 15. Wofford had nine fouls to Clemson's eight, with five yellow cards given out. With the second seed still up for grabs, the Wofford Terriers will be on the road to finish up their regular season at VMI on Saturday, November 2. The pivotal seeding game will kick off at 1 pm.
