Softball Sweeps Day Three of the Terrier Invite

Spartanburg, SC – Wofford softball built on the previous night's successes by dispatching first the George Mason Patriots 7-5, and then the Robert Morris Colonials 3-2 to now sit 3-1 in the inaugural season.

Game 1

Wofford found itself down early after conceding three runs on four hits and two errors but responded in the bottom of the third by executing a double steal. With freshmen Desirae Devine on first and Kalli Petty on third, Devine attempted to steal second and drawing the throw of the Patriot catcher. With the George Mason defense unable to catch Devine stealing, Petty was afforded the time to successfully steal home and claw back a run for the Terriers.

George Mason was then set down in order in the fourth, setting the stage for Wofford's biggest inning of the young season. Junior Hope Ingle led off the frame with a line drive homerun over the left field wall and then put three of the next four hitters on base for Petty to face Patriot pitcher Jordan Tallman with the bases loaded and a tie game.

Petty took advantage of a defense expecting a bunt by bunting, but doing so in a way that her bunt sailed over the first and second basewomen and taking away any opportunity to make a play on the runners. Two batters later Devine singled in Petty and freshman Abbi Campbell to put Wofford in front 6-4. A Havalynn Abernathy triple on the ensuing batter concluded Wofford's scoring.

The combination of freshmen Kendall Wylie and Abby Greenwood successfully navigated the remaining frames, only giving up two runs, to secure Wofford's win and their first win and save respectively- earning the Terriers the second seed.

Game 2

Now in the bracket portion of the Terrier invite, Wofford faced Robert Morris with an opportunity to rematch either Eastern Kentucky or George Mason in the finals with a win- and Abby Greenwood delivered an impressive complete game effort.

The freshman scattered four hits across the seven innings, only surrendering a single earned run, and collecting five strikeouts to just one walk. The hero offensively of game two was Hope Ingle singling down the left field line with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to score Desirae Devine and Kaytlin Greenwood and reclaim the Terrier lead.

Across both games, Ingle hit 3-for-6 with a homerun and three RBIs. The junior now leads the team with five RBIs, a .400 batting average through ten at bats and a 1.355 OPS. As a team the Terriers are 6-for-7 on stolen bases.

However, due to forecasted weather conditions, the Terrier Invite's finale between Eastern Kentucky and Wofford will not be played. EKU finished the Invite atop the standings at 4-0 with Wofford a game behind. The Terriers remain at home for the Wofford Invitational from February 16-18, welcoming Northern Kentucky, St. Francis (PA), and Rhode Island to Hope Field.
