Greensboro, NC – Wofford softball's inaugural season concluded on Thursday, May 9, falling to Samford 3-4 in ten innings in the final game of the SoCon Tourney quarterfinals.
The Terriers were placed on the back foot early, giving up a run in the first, but powered back with a three run fourth inning that started with
Hope Ingle drawing a nine-pitch walk. From there Wofford strung two singles, a fielder's choice, and a Samford error together to plate its three runs. Both singles resulted in RBIs and
Havalynn Abernathy and
Ally Bigham plated their eighth and ninth runs of the season respectively.
However, Wofford would only get one more runner into scoring position, which came in the tenth inning when a runner is placed on second base to start the frame, as dictated by the international tie-breaker rule. Samford meanwhile would plate runs in the fifth and seventh innings to force extra innings, the latter run came around to score with two outs before scoring the game winning run on an RBI single.
In the circle,
Margaret Axelson turned in another complete game, throwing all 9.1 innings while conceding nine hits, four runs (three earned), three walks and three strikeouts. The 127 pitches Axelson threw to navigate the contest match her number thrown against ETSU on May 8, and represent the fifth time this season she's thrown north of 100 pitches.
As a team, Wofford compiled a final season record of 23-24 (11-10 SoCon), held a 2.89 team ERA, scored 172 runs, 42 doubles, five triples, seven homeruns, 151 walks, and converted 50 of 59 stolen base attempts. Reigning SoCon Coach of the Year
Chelsea Butler is slated to return every player on the roster in 2025, save for
Ally Bigham, the lone senior. This means First Team All-SoCon selection
Margaret Axelson will return to the circle alongside All-Freshman selections
Abby Greenwood,
Kaytlin Greenwood, and
Megan Towery.
