Statesboro, Ga.- In its opening match of the season, the Wofford's men soccer team drew Georgia Southern 0-0 in a defensive duel in Statesboro, Georgia.
Chances were slim in the first half as both defenses were poised and ready to start the season off on the right foot. Both teams could only muster a combined five shots in the first half with none finding the target, Wofford with two and Georgia Southern with three. The Terriers' physical, tough defensive approach from last season was thriving in the season opener giving the Eagles trouble.
Although committing six fouls in the first half, the experienced and disciplined Wofford back line made life easy for first-year goalkeeper Leo Ledin as he did not have to make a save in the first half.
The game quickly changed in the second half, as Wofford dominated possession in Georgia Southern's half of the pitch. Taking nine shots total with four challenging the Eagles' goalkeeper.
Magnus Kjoller in the 70th minute sent a rocket towards the goal on a ricochet pass only for it to be batted away at the final moment by the keeper. Thaddeus Dennis and Fabian Menendez also registered shots on goal, but they were easily secured by the Georgia Southern goaltender. The Terriers' most dangerous opportunity came in the 85th minute as Jakob Andersson sent a ball to the back post for a sliding Ludwig Callebro. The shot went barely wide, as Georgia Southern held possession and slowly bled out the remainder of the of the clock resulting in a 0-0 draw.
The Eagles challenged freshman Leo Ledin a bit more on the scarce chances they had in the second half, taking two shots on goal, however the rookie goalkeeper held his nerve and easily secured both saves with minimal issue. Wofford's defense held strong all game although committing 10 fouls compared to Georgia Southern's four. This resulted in ample opportunity for the offense to take advantage, taking 11 shots in the game compared to the Eagles' six.
The Terriers will be back on the road on Thursday, August 29, with a matchup at Queens University set for 7:00 p.m.
