CHARLESTON, S.C. – In the season opener, the Wofford College women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over the College of Charleston at the Turner Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon. The Terriers won the doubles match and then took four of the six singles matches to earn the win.
The match was originally scheduled for January 25 but was postponed due to weather. It was the season opener for both teams.
"I am proud of how the girls competed today," said head coach
Krissy Hall. "We have been working really hard at practice and it showed in today's match. I look forward to watching the girls build from here throughout the rest of the season."
In doubles, the Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in all three matches. At #2 doubles,
Breda Brennan and
Emma Sorensen earned a 6-1 win.
Grace Agster and
Lily Woods had a 6-1 win at the #1 position to earn the doubles point for Wofford. The #3 doubles match was unfinished with
Chloe Elliott and
Brianna Wilbur leading 4-3.
The singles matches were close after the first set, with Wofford holding the lead in four of the six matches. At #2 singles,
Brianna Wilbur had a 7-5, 6-0 win.
Chloe Elliott added a 6-4, 6-1 win at the #6 position. The Cougars came back with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the #1 position and earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at the #5 position, giving Wofford a 3-2 overall lead in the match.
At #3 singles,
Lily Woods picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory which clinched the overall match for the Terriers. In the final match at #4 singles, Catherin Blouin won the first set 6-2 and lost the second set 7-6. In the third set tiebreaker, Blouin won 10-7.
For the next match, Wofford will host Emmanuel and Converse on Saturday, February 8, at the Reeves Tennis Center.
