GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by UNC Greensboro on Monday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts. The Terriers won the doubles point, but the Spartans won five of the six singles matches to secure the SoCon win.
Wofford had a late lead in all three doubles matches.
Robbie Young and
Jack Deveney had a 6-3 win at the #1 position and the Spartans claimed a 7-5 win at the #3 position. The duo of
Ian Rasheed and
Hugo Rask picked up a 7-6 (7-2) win at the #2 position to clinch the doubles point for the Terriers.
In singles play, the Spartans won the first set in four of the six matches. They won in straight sets at the #4, #6, and #5 positions to take a 3-1 lead. A three-set win at the #3 position clinched the match and a win at the #1 position gave the Spartans a 5-1 advantage. The final match to finish was at the #2 position as
Jack Deveney won the first set 7-5 and lost the second set 5-7. In the third set, Deveney won 6-2 to earn a point for the Terriers.
The match was previously scheduled for Sunday but was delayed one day due to rain. Wofford (4-8, 0-3) will visit UNC Asheville on Wednesday, March 19, for a match that was postponed from March 6 due to weather. The Spartans are 6-9 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon.
