Men’s Soccer Falls in Heartbreaking Home Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford Men's Soccer team (0-2-0) fell to Georgia Southern (2-0-1), 1-0, on Thursday night in their first game back at Snyder Field.

First Half
As both teams looked to settle into the match, it became a physical battle fast, with the Terriers having six fouls and the Eagles with seven. Adam Celik was shown a yellow card in the 20th minute. Ten minutes later, the Eagles earned a card themselves. Despite four corners and nine shots from Georgia Southern, a stalwart defense kept the ball out of the net for the Terriers. Although Wofford was held to three shots in the half, Nathan Simes forced the Eagles goalkeeper to make a quick save in the 43rd minute to keep it even going into the locker room.

Second Half
The offense picked up for the Terriers right out the gate with two shots within the first seven minutes. Both teams fought and the whistle continued to blow. Georgia Southern fouled seven times with one yellow card, while Wofford had six fouls and a card to Nick Dyer. In the 65th minute, The Eagles found Thomas Helgheim Jr. on the wing, who was able to cut the ball back into the box for Emil Seedorff to place it into the bottom right corner. The Eagles then received a perfect opportunity to seal the game with an 85th minute penalty kick, but Pepe Hinterschuster came up clutch with a big handed save. With time windling down, the Terriers were not able to convert an 89th minute corner and the final whistle blew.

Inside the Numbers
  • Jakob Andersson made his 50th start in his collegiate career.
