First Half Goal Is the Difference as Men’s Soccer Beats Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford Men's Soccer team (3-3-0) grabbed its third consecutive road win at Winthrop (0-6-0), 1-0, on Saturday night in its first of a two-game away stretch.

First Half
Wofford controlled the game from the start, maintaining possession over 60 percent of the time. The Eagles sat back in a strong defensive shape, deterring most of the Terriers' pushes on offense. Shots were rare in this half, Wofford leading the way with four to Winthrop's three.

In the 27th minute, Nathan Simes found Kalle Rahbek with a chipped ball behind the line. The Danish native was able to get off a shot, tipped by the fingers of the Winthrop keeper, but it was not enough to deflect it wide, giving Rahbek his first goal of the season.

A shot from Winthrop, with the clock running down in the half, hit off the side post, right into Pepe Hinterschuster's hands. With only one shot on target and one corner, the Terrier defense had little to do in the first half.

Second Half
Wofford came out of the locker room with more aggression moving forward. In the 47th minute, Samuel Byron found the ball at his feet from a headed pass by Rahbek, but could not convert. The Eagles responded with a similar effort, just two minutes later. The shots kept flying early on as the Terriers fired off two more shots before the clock ticked over to the 50-minute mark.

Winthrop did not want to enter Big South play without a win and pushed hard to throw off Wofford's momentum, playing multiple balls in behind. The Terriers stood strong and responded with more offensive pressure of their own.

The best chance by the Eagles involved a 67th-minute shot from roughly 20 yards out, blocked by Mikey Hernandez. The loose ball fell to the feet of Dragen Vrataric, who rocketed a shot toward goal, forcing Hinterschuster to pull over a strong-handed stop.

Possession continued to change hands, and the game became more physical with each team fouled multiple times in the last 15 minutes of the match. With one minute left on the clock, a header from the Eagles went just over the bar, killing Winthrop's hopes of a late equalizer.

Quotes from Coach Ryan Osborne
"I thought Winthrop was very organized, especially in the first half, and it took us a while to find a rhythm and find a way to break them down. Once we started to get our center backs a little higher up and driving in, I thought we did a lot better. It's a great ball from Nathan [Simes] into Kalle [Rahbek] that led to the first goal, and I don't think we managed the game particularly well from that point onward".

"I thought the boys worked really hard, but I think we went in search of the second goal a little bit there at the end of the first half, and we got very disjointed structurally and gave up some chances, which I'm not happy about. Disappointed that we couldn't get the second goal to kind of seal it and make the game a little bit easier to manage at the end there. But again, perseverance from the boys and we found a way to grind it through and get the result and get our first clean sheet of the year, which is really great".

"I think Pepe [Hinterschuster] made a couple of really good saves tonight. We lived a bit dangerously at times, but at the same time, we could have had another goal or two with the quality of chances we created. But overall, happy, good win, but definitely a lot of things to tweak heading into the Upstate game".
