BLACKSBURG, Va. – Facing Virginia Tech for the second time in four seasons, the Wofford College football team was defeated 38-6 at Lane Stadium. The Terriers held the Hokies to seven points in the first quarter, but the Wofford offense was limited to a pair of field goals in the game.
Wofford opens the season at 0-4, while Virginia Tech is 1-3. The Terriers were led on offense by
Jayden Whitaker with 16-of-27 passing for 142 yards.
Ivory Aikens had four catches for 42 yards. Quarterback Kyron Drones led the Hokies with 27-of-32 passing and two touchdowns.
"We played a lot of young players today," said coach
Shawn Watson. "We're hoping that as we move forward, having played a bunch of young guys will help us out in our season. I thought defense did some really good things at times today. We gave up the edge a few times, but overall, they did a nice job. We need a bye week to mend and heal as we keep moving our football team forward."
The Terriers won the toss and received the opening kickoff. After a three-and-out, the Hokies had a 26-yard run for a first down and then faced a fourth-and-two from the eight-yard line.
Kade Moledor and
O'marion Brown stopped the run and Wofford took over on downs. The Terriers went three-and-out and punted. With a pair of penalties, the Hokies were backed up to their 17-yard line, but a long run and a targeting penalty on the Terriers moved the ball across midfield. Another Wofford penalty and a first down pass moved Virginia Tech inside the five. A three-yard touchdown run gave the Hokies a 7-0 lead with 6:26 left in the first quarter.
Jayden Whitaker completed a 23-yard pass to
Ivory Aikens to move into Hokie territory. After a first down run, a sack on third down forced a Wofford punt. The Hokies had a nine-play drive that covered 80 yards and was capped by a 19-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead with 11:53 on the clock in the second quarter. After a three-and-out by Wofford, the ensuing Virginia Tech drive ended with a fumble forced by
O'marion Brown that was recovered by
Alijah Williams at the 32-yard line. However, on the first play for the Terriers, the Hokies intercepted
Jayden Whitaker. Virginia Tech had a pair of first downs and extended the advantage to 21-0 with an 18-yard touchdown pass with 6:24 on the clock. The Terriers went three-and-out and then forced a Hokie three-and-out after a big sack by
Alijah Williams.
Ivory Aikens had a 17-yard reception to move across the 50. After a personal foul penalty for a first down, the Terriers were able to get on the board with a 43-yard field goal by
Sam Spence for a 21-3 score with 43 seconds left in the first half. A 59-yard field goal try by the Hokies as time expired was short.
The Hokies began the second half with the ball and drove inside the five-yard line. A short touchdown pass was overturned on replay and they kicked a 20-yard field goal for a 24-3 lead with 9:00 on the clock. After Wofford gained one first down, they punted. With the ball back, Virginia Tech had three first downs and scored on a one-yard run to push the lead to 31-3. The Terriers had three first downs and added a 42-yard field goal by
Sam Spence to make it a 31-6 game with 13:23 left. Virginia Tech took advantage of a kickoff out of bounds and needed just six plays to add to the lead with a two-yard touchdown run. With 10:52 remaining, the Hokies had a 38-6 advantage. Wofford went three-and-out and then Virginia Tech had a pair of first downs before punting. The Terriers took over with four minutes on the clock and had a first down reception by
Jack Purdy before punting. The Hokies took a knee to end the game.
Hokie defense, led by former Wofford defensive coordinator Sam Siefkes, held Wofford to 141 total yards, with 142 passing yards. Virginia Tech had 461 total yards, with 307 of those passing yards. Wofford had eight first downs to 28 for the Hokies. Wofford was 5-of-15 on third down. Virginia Tech was 6-of-11 on third down and 0-of-1 on fourth down. Virginia Tech was called for eight penalties, while Wofford was called for seven. Virginia Tech had a 34:29 to 25:31 time of possession advantage.
