FARMVILLE, Va. – The Wofford Men's Soccer team (2-2-0) bring themselves back to even on the season with a 2-1 win at Longwood (1-1-1) to close out their away stint with two out of two wins.
First Half
The Terriers set the tempo early in the match, dominating the first five minutes with possession and creating key passes in the attacking third. Despite this, the Lancers took the first shot of the match from 25 yards out, easily scooped up by
Pepe Hinterschuster.
The wet grass helped the ball move quickly, favoring a quick passing form of play. Both teams shared spells of possession. In the 19th minute,
Nathan Simes received a strong pass from the midfield, where he was able to turn and fire off a shot on frame to test the Lancer goalkeeper, Max Hinke, for the first time of the night. The Lancers almost went ahead first, as the wet grass made the defender slip, before the attacker was called offside. A slow half overall, with both teams moving the ball back and forth to find an opening which rarely came, with only six shots registered between the two teams.
The biggest chance of the half came with a ball slipped in behind for Longwood on a breakaway, but Hinterschuster pulled out a leg save to keep it even going into the locker rooms.
Second Half
Three minutes after the restart,
Niklas Hegle made a simple tackle, playing the ball long to Simes out wide. The New Zealand native,
Nathan Simes, was able to put a driven ball into the box to find
Declan Mettee, whose redirection forced Longwood to make a quick save. With the ball spilling in the box,
Max Talley chased it down, only to be stopped again by the Lancer goalkeeper. The Terriers kept the pressure high, allowing Simes to find space in the box to slot the ball into the bottom right corner, breaking the deadlock in the 52nd minute.
The offenses were pumped in the first part of this second half, with eight shots fired off in the first 20 minutes. Each team had strong chances to add more goals to the scoring sheet, but a mixture of acrobatic saves and shots, just wide of the post, kept the score the same.
A corner in the 73
rd minute found a player at the back post who headed it across the six-yard box to find
Nathan Simes for his second brace in two games. Wofford absorbed pressure from the Lancers as they began to drop back to preserve the shutout, but they were unsuccessful. In the dying embers of the match, Ezrah Serralde found space to power it to the bottom left corner just minutes before the final whistle.
Quote from Coach Ryan Osborne
"Longwood is a good opponent and have had a strong start to the season at home. We travelled well and managed to do what the game required to get over the line. The boys adjusted well at half time, and it was nice to see us score multiple times again. We worked hard and had some really positive moments, particularly in the second half. We will enjoy the win, rest up and learn lessons ahead of playing a tough UNC Asheville at home on Tuesday".
