SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team drew even with UNCG 1-1 on Saturday night at Snyder Field. The Terriers extended their unbeaten streak to three and remain unbeaten in conference play, but they were unable to secure three points and clinch the Southern Conference regular-season title before their final game of the season.
First Half
The Terriers started off the first half strong with quick shots from
Samuel Byron and
Adam Celik within the first eight minutes of the game. But after that, UNCG really buckled down on defense and began to heavily control possession and kept the ball in the Terriers' half of the field. Wofford did not have a shot attempt for the rest of the half, but the Terriers' defense stood firm and only allowed five UNCG shots, one of which was a low shot to the bottom left corner that was stopped after an impressive diving save by
Evan Morris.
Second Half
In the second half, Wofford possessed the ball much more, but the defense from the two teams remained excellent. In the 58th minute,
Adam Celik drew a foul in the box, which earned a penalty kick for Wofford.
Fabian Menendez fired into the left corner for his fifth goal of the season. The two teams remained locked in a defensive battle with very few shots from either side until the Spartans were able to score in the 70th minute to tie the game and ultimately force a draw.
