GREENVILLE, S.C.—The Wofford men's soccer team clinched a share of the Southern Conference Regular Season Championship, despite falling short 1-4 against Furman Saturday night at Stone Soccer Stadium. The Terriers finished the regular season with a 3-1-2 record and 11 points in conference play, which tied them with Furman for first place in the conference, clinching their first conference championship since 2013.
First Half
The Terriers had a back-and-forth first half with Furman, with both sides creating chances and having their moments. Furman struck first, with a quick goal in the ninth minute, but the Terriers quickly fought their way back. In the 15th minute,
Fabian Menendez intercepted a short pass from the Furman goalkeeper, and after several quick dribbles he delivered the ball into the box for
Taylor Bowen, who put away his third goal of the season to tie the game 1-1. The two sides went back and forth for the rest of the half, with good chances from both, but neither could break the deadlock before halftime.
Second Half
The Terriers came out of halftime strong, but were unable to find a go-ahead opportunity. In the 57th minute, Furman scored their second goal of the night, and despite a review for what appeared to be a handball in the box, the goal stood for the Paladins. The Terriers continued to battle, but Furman managed to score their third and fourth goal in the 62nd and 69th minutes. Wofford had some good opportunities after and had several promising looks in the Furman box, but were unable to score before the end of the game.
