SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team earned a 3-0 shutout win against Georgia State at Snyder Field on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers tied their season high for goals in a game with three and gave Georgia State its first loss of the season, ending a three-game Panthers winning streak.
First Half
The Terriers had a slow first half but were able to control possession and create chances. In the first fifteen minutes of the game, both
Bradley Takamo and
Clemens Astrup were able to get shots on goal, but both were saved. Georgia State responded with two shots of their own, but they were saved by Wofford goalkeeper
Pepe Hinterschuster. Towards the end of the half, Takamo put up another good shot, but it was saved again by the Panthers' keeper.
Second Half
In the second half, the Terriers exploded offensively, starting in the 52nd minute when forward
Taylor Bowen drew a penalty kick for Wofford. The penalty was taken and scored by senior midfielder
Fabian Menendez, giving him his first goal of the season. It was not long before sophomore center back
Scott Cheevers tapped in a loose ball in the box in the 55th minute to put Wofford up 2-0. Finally, in the 68th minute, Bowen put the ball in the back of the net off a beautiful set of assists by
Clemens Astrup and
Samuel Byron.
"The message was that we didn't become a bad team overnight," said Osborne when asked about bouncing back from Tuesday's loss against UNC Asheville. "We have to keep doing what we're doing, and play within our identity, and remember what we are and who we are. I think the boys showed that today, and we found a way to score three great goals and keep a clean sheet, which always makes you happy."
The win marked
Ryan Osborne's tenth win as the head coach of Wofford.
