Charleston, S.C. - The Wofford tennis team defeated The Citadel 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center. Wofford concludes the 2010 season at 8-12, and 4-6 in the Southern Conference.The Bulldogs posted a 2010 record of 8-14, 2-8 in the Southern Conference
In doubles action, the Terriers took an early lead by winning two of three matches. At number two doubles David Orces and Derek Dickey were defeated by Wofford's Paul Bartholomy and Stuart Robertson, 8-4, and Josh Cook and Luis Morett fell, 8-3, to Drew Superstein and Tom Wood at number three doubles..
The Citadel tried to make a comeback for the win in singles play. To tie the match at 1-1, Alberto Diaz defeated the Stuart Robertson, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 position. Then Wofford took the lead back when Josh Cook fell, 6-4, 6-4, to Paul Bartholomy at number four singles. The Citadel won the number three and five singles match to take a 3-2 lead.
Then Wofford's Tom Wood responded in three sets at the No. 6 position to tie the match at 3-3. Luis Morett won the first set, 6-3, but Wood won the second set 6-1. Wood won the decisive third set 6-3.
This left Yufo Sutantio and Tinus Van Wyk to decided the match at the No. 1 position. Van Wyk won the first set 6-4 but lost the second 4-6. Sutantio began to suffer from severe leg cramps in the third rally allowing Van Wyk to claim the Wofford win.
After the match Wofford head coach Rod Ray said "I am proud of the way we competed in the last match of the season. To end on a positive note speaks volumes about our guys perseverance and determination. The Citadel played hard and kept the match close the entire way. All our guys played well in the doubles which gave us a good boost leading into the singles".
