FLORENCE, S.C. – The Wofford men’s golf team finished the season by competing at the 2010 Southern Conference Championship, held in Florence, S.C., April 18-20. Freshman Mark Joye earned league Freshman of the Year honors, the conference also announced.

The Terriers finished ninth in the tournament, led by freshman Mark Joye and senior Garrett Medeiros. Joye carded a two-over par score of 218 over three rounds, including a low round of 69 to finish tied for 13th individually. The freshman from Columbia, S.C. also led the team with 12 birdies on the par-72, 7,062 yard course.

Joye earned the league’s Freshman of the Year honors, while also being named to the All-Freshman and All-Conference teams. Medeiros, a senior from Rumford, R.I. joined Joye on the All-Conference team, voted on by the league’s 10 coaches.

Senior Garrett Medeiros tied for 28th overall with a final score of 223 (78-72-73, +7). Fellow senior Mike McKenzie recorded a three-round score of 227 (78-73-76) to finish tied for 36th, and sophomore Zach Capps shot a 230 (75-79-76) to tie for 42nd individually. Sophomore Ben Wright rounded out the Terriers’ scores with a 231 (79-76-76).

Wofford recorded a team score of 895, improving a first-round score of 305 with second and third round scores of 290 and 300, respectively. The Terriers finished four strokes behind Appalachian State, while finishing ahead of both Davidson and Samford.

Furman claimed the team championship with a 15-under par 849(280-279-290), finishing 16 strokes ahead of second-place Georgia Southern (290-286-289—865). Furman’s Austin Reeves earned the individual title with a nine-under par score of 207 (71-66-70). The Paladins’ effort marked the lowest team score (849) in the four years that the event has been held at the Country Club of South Carolina and the 16-stroke margin of victory was the greatest since 2001.
