Baseball Falls 5-4 At Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 5-4 by Western Carolina at Hennon Stadium on Friday evening. The Terriers had nine hits in the game, but left eleven runners on base in the loss.

Wofford is 9-20 on the season and 3-7 in the SoCon, while Western Carolina 20-8-1 overall and 4-5-1 in conference play. The Terriers were led by Mac Doyle with three hits and two RBIs, while Tom Dolinak had seven strikeouts. For the Catamounts, Trevor Collias had two hits and Tyler White and Cameron Dullnig each had two RBIs. Western Carolina stranded 13 runners in the game.

The Terriers opened the game with a lead-off single by James Foster and he was driven in by a two-out single up the middle from Mac Doyle. With two hits and two walks the Catamounts tied the game, but two straight strikeouts left the bases loaded at the end of the inning.

In the bottom of the second, Dylan de Graaf hit a single, stole second and advanced to third on an error. He was driven in by Trevor Collias on a single to left field to give the Catamounts a 2-1 lead.

After scoreless third and fourth innings, Wofford had singles from James Foster and Kyle Behrendt in the top of the fifth. James Foster scored on a throw to first in a failed pickoff attempt to tie the game. Mac Doyle then launched a ball that hit the top of the purple monster for a triple that scored Behrendt for a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Ollie Goulder singled and Tyler White reached on an error. A single by Cameron Dullnig scored both runners to give the Catamounts back the lead at 4-3.

In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, the Catamounts had a single from Cory Cronan and Ollie Goulder walked. A single by Tyler White drove in one run for a 5-3 lead, but two runners were left on base at the end of the inning.

Wofford had a two-out double by Mac Doyle in the top of the seventh and he moved to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded. In the top of the eighth, Landon Bennett led off the inning by reaching on an error and Konstantine Diamaduros followed with a single. A sacrifice bunt by Alex Lee moved the runners and a walk by Michael McDonnell loaded the bases. A wild pitch allowed Landon Bennett to score from third for a 5-4 score, however the Terriers left two on base.

The Catamounts left two on base in the bottom of the eighth, giving them 13 stranded in the game. In the top of the ninth, David Roney reached on an error with two out, but was left on base for a 5-4 final score.

For the Terriers, starter Tom Dolinak (0-4) went 4.1 innings and had a career-high seven strikeouts. He allowed seven hits and four runs, only two of which were earned. Bobby Streisel threw three innings and allowed two hits and one run with four strikeouts. Cash Collins allowed one hit. Ryan Traylor went the final two-thirds of an inning with one strikeout.

Western Carolina starter Jason Sullivan (4-1) also went 4.1 innings with seven hits allowed. Andrew Chilcoat struck out the one batter he faced in the fifth. Mat Batts went 1.2 innings with four strikeouts along with two hits allowed. Brandon Johnson threw an inning with a strikeout. Daniel Ottone picked up his sixth save of the season and did not allow a hit in the ninth.

Wofford continues the three-game series at Western Carolina on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
