Men’s Basketball Falls To BYU In NCAA Tournament 74-66

DENVER, Colorado – In the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night at the Pepsi Center, the Wofford men’s basketball team was defeated 74-66 by BYU. The Terriers and Cougars each had four players score in double figures.

Wofford ends the season at 21-13 and BYU is 31-4 overall. The Cougars are the #3 seed in the Southeast region, with the Terriers the #14 seed. Wofford was led by Noah Dahlman with 22 points and Tim Johnson with eleven rebounds. The Cougars were led by the nation’s leading scorer Jimmer Fredette with 32 points and Kyle Collinsworth with eleven rebounds.

Noah Dahlman scored the first four points of the game as Wofford took a 4-0 lead. The Cougars answered with the next five points and BYU had a 7-6 lead with 14:51 on the clock. Terry Martin hit a mid-range jumper to tie the game at 10 with 11:49 left in the first half.

The Cougars took a 14-10 lead, but the Terriers responded and took a 17-14 advantage after a three pointer by Cameron Rundles with 8:03 on the clock. Jamar Diggs added a jumper for a 21-19 lead. Wofford had a four-point lead at 25-21 after two free throws by Noah Dahlman with 5:49 left in the first half.

A 9-0 run by BYU that include a three by Jimmer Fredette gave the Cougars a 30-25 lead with 2:30 left in the first half. Wofford ended the four-minute scoring drought with two free throws by Noah Dahlman at the 1:48 mark. Noah Dahlman then had four free throw attempts after a technical foul on BYU, but he made only one of the four. Jimmer Fredette added a three to take a 33-29 lead at the half.

To open the second half, the Cougars scored the first four points to take a 37-29 lead. Noah Dahlman hit a lay-up with 15:59 on the clock to make it a 41-35 game. A three by Brad Loesing at the 14:16 mark cut the BYU lead to 45-40. The Cougars had a 49-41 lead with 11:04 on the clock after a bucket from Jimmer Fredette.

Wofford cut the lead to 49-43 after a bucket by Noah Dahlman at the ten-minute mark of the second half. BYU was able to push the lead back to 55-47 with 7:34 remaining in the half. Two free throws by Terry Martin made it a 57-51 game with 7:12 on the clock, however the Cougars scored the next eight points to take a 65-51 lead with 3:42 remaining.

In the final three minutes of the contest, the Terriers were unable to slow down the Cougars. A three by Jamar Diggs with 1:13 on the clock cut the lead to 71-61. A final three pointer by Terry Martin provided the 74-66 score when the buzzer sounded.

Wofford shot 39.3% from the floor and was 21.1% from three. From the free throw line, the Terriers were 75.0%. BYU was 39.3% overall and was 27.3% from behind the arc. They were 83.3% from the line. The Cougars had a 39-36 lead on the glass and forced 13 Wofford turnovers. Charles Abouo fouled out for the Cougars.

Noah Dahlman recorded his 2,000th career point in the first half. He is only the fifth player in school history and the first in the school’s Division I-era to reach that mark. Tim Johnson had his 1,000th career rebound in the second half, ranking seventh in school history and first in the NCAA Division I- era at Wofford.

The game marked the final contest for five Wofford seniors – Noah Dahlman, Tim Johnson, Cameron Rundles, Jamar Diggs and Terry Martin. The past two seasons have seen this group lead the Terriers to back-to-back 20+ win seasons, SoCon South Division titles and SoCon Tournament titles. They also appeared in the NCAA Tournament in both seasons.
