SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men’s and women’s track and field teams finished the first day of the 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The meet, which is being held at Georgia Southern, will conclude on Sunday.

Samantha Hughes scored the first points of the meet for Wofford with a sixth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:15.76.

In the women’s 800 meter preliminaries, Alyssa Burkert was sixth at 2:11.82 and Katie Kessler was seventh with a career-best 2:12.78. Both advance to the finals on Sunday.

For the men, Russell Baker ran a personal best 33:55.26 in the 10,000 meter finals. Chase West ran a personal best 50.57 in the 400 meter preliminaries, just shy of a school record. Ryan Doyle posted a career-best time of 9:38.83 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to finish tenth. Tevin Johnson went 6.61 meters in the long jump to finish tenth.
