SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford kicker Kasey Redfern has signed as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Redfern was one of three players invited to participate in the club's mandatory minicamp this week on a tryout basis. He signed at the conclusion of the minicamp on Thursday afternoon.
A native of Jamestown, North Carolina, Redfern handled all the kicking duties for the Terriers his senior season. He was fourth in the Southern Conference in punting with a 42.4 yard average. He led the team in scoring with 44 points, as he was 6-of-10 on field goals and 26-of-28 on extra points. On 46 kickoffs, he averaged 61.6 yards with 19 touchbacks. Following the October 12 game against Elon, he was named the Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
During his junior season, he set the school record for longest field goal with a 53-yarder at Samford. For his career, Redfern was 11-of-19 on field goals and scored 85 points. He punted 146 times with a 39.6 yard average and had 250 kickoffs with a 61.3 yard average. He also had two carries for 41 yards on fake punts, including a run of 28 yards at Clemson in 2011. He graduated from Wofford in May with a degree in accounting.
Redfern will join two other recent Wofford graduates in NFL training camps this season. Wide receiver Brenton Bersin spent last season on the practice squad with the Carolina Panthers and Alvin Scioneaux was signed this spring by the San Diego Chargers. Training camps will begin at the end of July.
