SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's tennis team started the home slate of their 2016 schedule on a strong note, defeating King University (Tenn.) 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
The Terriers (2-1) started the match dropping only one doubles set and then cruised to victories in all six singles matches as well. The Tornado (0-4) only took more than one set in the last singles match.
"I was really proud of the way we came out in our first home match," Head Coach
Krissy Hall said after the match. "I thought we had great energy from our team as well as from our fans outside. We love playing at home, and it showed in how we came out on the court today."
Freshman
Cassidy Hicks and junior
Kalli Karas defeated King's number one doubles pairing of junior Katya Cerny and sophomore Nia Gilliam 6-0, and freshman
Curran Carver and sophomore
Samantha Russell took their match 6-0 from the number three spot as well. Junior
Catherine Martin and
Lauren Reid defeated King's Marianne Hull and Ashley Salazar 6-1 in the number two doubles match.
In singles, the Terriers swept the field. Martin won from the number one spot 6-0, 6-1 to improve to 2-1 on the season. Reid defeated Cerny at the number four spot 6-1, 6-0 to move to 3-0 in singles to start the season. Hicks also won her match 6-1, 6-0 at the two spot.
Juniors
Taylor Carlson and Karas both won their matches 6-1, 6-1, with Karas playing at the number three spot and Carlson at the five position. Russell made her season debut Sunday by winning her singles match 6-1, 6-4 from the six position.
The Terriers have now won four straight home openers, beating King 7-0 in last season's home opener as well. Wofford is 13-8 in home openers since moving to play at the NCAA Division I level before the 1995-96 season. The Terriers are now 3-0 all-time vs. King.
Wofford returns to action February 12 when the Terriers take on cross-town rival USC Upstate at home. That match at the Reeves Tennis Center will begin at 2 p.m.
