HAYESVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford women's golf team finished seventh and two golfers recorded top 10 finishes at the inaugural Bill Berg Invitational hosted by Western Carolina. The three day, 54 hole tournament took place Oct. 16-18 at The Ridges Country Club and was comprised of 12 teams.
The Terriers shot a team score of 921 for the tournament, 57 over par on the par 72 course. Wofford improved each round of the tournament as
Angie Ridgeway's team shot a 314 in Sunday's opening round, 313 in Monday's second round, and a 294 in Tuesday's final round. The 294 team effort was the lowest round for the Terriers in the tournament but was also the low of the day among all teams. In addition, it was the lowest round of the fall season by the Terriers, surpassing the previous low by 11 strokes.
Wofford's play was highlighted by
Katy Funk as the native of Spartanburg finished sixth overall, her second consecutive top 10 finish. Funk also improved throughout the tournament as the senior opened with a round of 78 but played much better in the second two rounds. She shot a two over par 74 in the second round and an even par 72 in Tuesday's final round to finish eight over for the tournament. The round of 72 is Funk's lowest of the young season and the lowest round of her career since Sept. 10, 2013 when she shot a 71 in the Terrier Intercollegiate.
Grace Massengill also recorded a top 10 finish, her second in as many tournaments, as the freshman finished with a 225, nine over par for the tournament. Massengill had rounds of 74, 79, and 72. The freshman's round of 72 is also her lowest round of the season and of her Wofford career.
Madison Barnett, playing in the lineup for the first time this season, shot 82, 77, and 72 over the three rounds to finish in a tie for 19
th place. The freshman's score counted towards the team score in all three rounds and she, too, set a season and career low with her round of 72.
Nicole Chin had rounds of 80, 83, and 82 to finish 29 over par.
Page Morehead had rounds of 88, 85, and 78 to finish 35 over par.
Eastern Kentucky won the tournament with a total team score of 889, 20 strokes better than host school Western Carolina who finished second. James Madison, Appalachian State, and Marshall rounded out the top five.
The Terriers will be back in action Oct. 31- Nov. 1 at the Idle Hour Intercollegiate hosted by Mercer. The tournament will be held at the Idle Hour Golf & Country Club in Macon, Ga.
