THE MATCHUP:  Welcome to the FCS version of the Elite Eight. Wofford, by virtue of Saturday's 17-3 win at The Citadel, advances to the Quarterfinals to face Youngstown State. Wofford has only faced the Penguins once, a 24-0 loss in 1996 season opener. Wofford returns to the Quarterfinals for the first time since 2012 - the program's 4th trip to this round. Wofford advanced to the semifinals in 2003. This is the program's 7th trip to the I-AA/FCS Postseason. Quick notes on YSU - former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was the head coach at YSU from 1986-2000 and now serves as the University's President. Tressel was at the helm during a dominant stretch for the Penguins in the then I-AA football ranks leading the program to National Championships in 1991, '93, '94 and '97. Overall this is the 'Guins 12th trip to the I-AA/FCS Playoffs. Bo Pelini, the head coach at Nebraska (2008-14) is in his 2nd year leading the Penquins. Pelini is a Youngstown, OH native. YSU advanced with an impressive road win of their own, defeating seeded Jacksonville State, 40-24. The Penguins play power football ,so the Wofford rush defense will be tested. The Wofford rush defense is 6th in the nation (best remaining team) allowing 91.2 ypg and YSU allows 117.8 ypg on the ground, good for 15th. Wofford is 5th (best of the 8 remaining teams) in total defense (277.5) and the Penguins rank 12th (314.7). On the scoring defense side the Terriers are the best remaining team there as well, allowing 16.1 ppg, YSU allows just 17.7 points, 3rd best among the 8 remaining teams. The Terriers are the FCS's 5th best rushing offense (2nd of the remaining teams behind JMU) at 278.3 ypg while YSU ranks 7th at 258.5 ypg.   If this sounds like it could be a repeat of last week's "street fight," as Coach Ayers termed the contest with The Citadel, that may very well be accurate. Expect another physical contest on both sides.
