HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Behind a strong final round 18-over-par 308, the women's golf team climbed five spots on the leaderboard to finish the 8th annual Low Country Intercollegiate in ninth place (+57, 633) on Sunday at Moss Creek Golf Club.
Â
The Terriers began the day in 14th after a Saturday 37-over-par 325. They found a way to put all that behind them Sunday and even gave a run at the tournament's single-round scoring record (302) before a few bogeys down the stretch put it out of reach. Wofford's final-round 308 was one shot shy of Bethune-Cookman and Appalachian State for the low round of the day.
Â
Bethune-Cookman broke the tournament's team scoring record to win the championship, carding a winning total of 35-over-par 611. The Wildcats began the day two shots behind first-round leader Chattanooga and overtook the Mocs by three strokes with a final-round 19-over 307. Chatt also broke the tournament's previous team scoring record of 40-over 616, but finished second to Bethune-Cookman at 38-over 614.
Â
Sasha Banks of Brown University matched the tournament's individual scoring record to take medalist honors. Banks posted the only under-par round of the two-day tournament with a 1-under 71 to come from three shots back for the title. Banks topped Chattanooga's Emily McLennan and BCU's Yudika Rodriguez by two shots, tying the 36-hole record of 2-over-par 146.
Â
For Wofford, sophomore
Nicole Chin led the way with a 16th-place finish of 11-over 155. Chin was impressive on Sunday, making par on all but three holes. Starting on 12, she bogeyed the par-4 13th but quickly recovered with a birdie on the par-5, 487-yard 14th. The Irmo native strung together 11 straight pars before a double-bogey on the par-4 eighth resulted in a final round 2-over 74. It was the third-lowest round of the day among the 93-man field.
Â
Senior
Emiley Pagrabs bounced back from an 86 on Saturday to shoot a 4-over 76 on Sunday. Pagrabs carded no worse than a bogey all day and earned her lone birdie at the par-5 fourth. She jumped 28 spots to finish tied for 51st alongside senior
Maegan Higgins (+18).
Â
Freshman
Page Morehead was consistent with rounds of 79 and 80 to finish the tournament in 39th at 15-over-par 159. Sophomore
Lela Oakley was 48th at 17-over 161.
Â
The Terriers have one more tournament to get ready for the Southern Conference Championship, returning to competition on Sunday, April 3, at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. The tournament is hosted by Appalachian State at Mimosa Hills Golf & Country Club in Morganton, N.C.
