Six weeks ago, 64 of college basketball's most talented freshmen from mid-major conferences were entered in a bracket-style voting competition to determine a Mid-Major Freshman of the Year. Each week, players went head-to-head with fans casting votes via Twitter and an online poll.
Â
Magee, the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, heavily outvoted UNCG's Francis Alonso in the first round and got by Vermont's Ernie Duncan in the second round to advance to the Sweet 16. He was then matched up with IPFW's John Konchar, squeaking out a 51.06% - 48.94% win to make the Elite 8. There, he defeated Siena College's Nico Clareth, 54.53% - 45.47%, to earn a spot in the Final 4.
Â
Behind a tremendous amount of support from Wofford fans, Magee cruised past Matt Morgan of Cornell, 65.83% - 34.17%, setting up the championship round against Jaylen Franklin. Magee began the championship with a strong lead, but fell behind late in the week and trailed by fractions heading into Sunday's final day of voting. A strong push catapulted Magee to victory.
Â
In total, more than 350,000 overall votes were cast in the competition. Magee received 95,375 of them, including nearly 50,000 in the championship round alone. Magee was also the competition's overall top vote-getter through Twitter, receiving over 40,000 votes on social media. He earned 28,803 votes on Twitter in the championship round.
Â
"Thank you to everyone for all the retweets and votes," said Magee on Twitter. "It means a lot to see a lot of people support me!"
Â
Magee averaged 13.8 points per game through his freshman campaign. He led the nation at 92.5-percent from the foul line and was third in the country at 47.9-percent from the 3-point arc. His free throw percentage marked the program's new single-season record, while his 3-point shooting was a program-best in the Div. I era.
Â
Magee's season was highlighted by his 34-point performance on Feb. 8 against VMI, in which he shot 11-of-13 from the field and an incredible 9-of-10 from long range. It marked just the 17th time in the last 20 years than an NCAA Div. I player shot 90 percent from 3-point range in a game (min. 10 attempts). Wofford finished the night 17-of-21 (81.0%) from beyond the arc, setting a new NCAA Div. I record.
Â
The Orlando, Fla., native reached double figure in each of the final 12 game of the season, including three straight 20-point games down the stretch. He scored 23 on 7-of-15 shooting and 6-of-11 from three in Wofford's double-overtime loss to Western Carolina in the SoCon quarterfinals and was named to the all-tournament team.
