SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite
Eric Garcia and
Ryan Sawvell recording double-double performances, the Wofford men's basketball team fell 104-103 against The Citadel on Monday night in Benjamin Johnson Arena. The loss was the first for Wofford at home since Chattanooga defeated the Terriers 77-68 on Jan. 11, 2016. With the loss, Wofford falls to 6-9 on the season and 1-1 in Southern Conference play while The Citadel improves to 8-8 overall and 1-2 in conference action with the win.
Â
After setting his career high last game with 31 points,
Eric Garcia followed with another strong performance. His 27 points led all scorers and his 11 assists were good enough for a double-double, the second of the season and second of Garcia's career. Twenty three of Garcia's points came in the second half as the senior finished 8-16 from the field, 4-8 from three point range and 7-8 from the free throw line. His 11 assists on the night ties a career high, with both performances coming against The Citadel.
Â
Ryan Sawvell also recorded a double-double in the game. The redshirt senior finished with 19 points and tied his career high with 13 rebounds.
Fletcher Magee, who has scored in double figures in all of Wofford's games this season, scored 18 points in 38 minutes of play.
Cameron Jackson was the fourth Terrier in double figures as the sophomore tallied 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Â
Wofford led by as many as eight and trailed by as many as nine in a game that was back and forth throughout. With 8:08 to go in the first half, The Citadel took their largest lead, nine, off of a three pointer from Matt Frierson. A Magee layup cut it within three with just under five minutes to go in the half and
Nathan Hoover again cut the lead, this time to just a single point, with 1:50 to go but the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to end the half and took a 46-37 lead into the locker room.
Â
Wofford chipped away at the Bulldog lead out of the half and eventually took a 54-53 lead with 14:46 to go in regulation. With Wofford trailing just two points, 66-64, The Citadel went on a 7-0 run to stretch the lead back to nine but Wofford went on a 10-0 run right after to take a 79-76 lead. Wofford led by three with just under two minutes left on the clock, but Preston Parks sunk a three point shot with 1:14 to go and the 91-91 score would hold through the buzzer.
Â
The Citadel came out firing in overtime and led by seven with 2:29 left. Wofford cut it to two points off of a layup by
Cameron Jackson with 34 seconds to go before Frankie Johnson sunk two free throws to extend the lead back to four. Garcia sunk a three, one of his four of the night, with eight seconds to go but the lone point difference was enough for The Citadel to hang out and claim the win.
Â
Wofford and The Citadel finished with nearly identical field goal percentages as the Terriers shot 50.8% and The Citadel shot 49.3%. Wofford had an advantage in points in the paint (52-48) and second chance points (18-9), though The Citadel finished with 19 points on the fast break to Wofford's 11 and scored 57 points off the bench compared to Wofford's 26.
Â
Six Bulldogs finished in double figures, led by Kaelon Harris with 23 points.
Â
Wofford hits the road for the next two conference matchups. First, Wofford travels to face Chattanooga, the preseason pick to win the conference, on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game before traveling to Samford for a Saturday showdown. The Terriers return home on Saturday, Jan. 14 against Furman.
